Best Summer Reading Books for Kids 2024

It’s hard to believe that summer is here, and so is our Osceola Reads Summer Reading Challenge! We know it can be hard to fit in reading when you’re competing against trips to the beach and soaking up the great Florida sun. However, just 15 minutes of summer reading every day can greatly improve your child’s kindergarten reading skills during the first few weeks of school. Join us as we share our favorite summer reading list, just in time to kick off our Summer Reading Challenge

Summer by Ailie Busby

There's something special about each season of the year, wherever we live in the world. Follow the adventures of two characters as they discover and explore the unique characteristics of summer through indoor and outdoor play. 

This is the perfect introduction to the cycles of the year and one of our favorite seasons, too! Kids love the bright pictures and easy stories, which help them understand and appreciate the joys of summer.

Paletero Man by Lucky Diaz

Do you hear that sound? It’s the ringing of Paletero José, and his ice pops that are perfect for any hot summer day! Follow the narrator as he passes through the busy neighborhood to catch up to the Paletero Man. But what happens when he finally finds him and his pockets are empty? It would take the whole community to get him that tasty treat. 

This book is written in a mix of Spanglish and comes with a song inspired by the book, making it a perfect book for bilingual kids to improve their literacy skills in both Spanish and English!

The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen

It’s summertime, so there’s no reason to pout! But the pout-pout fish seems to be doing nothing but spreading his glum attitude. Let’s swim along as the pout-pout fish discovers that maybe pouting isn’t his destiny.
