5 Books to Read Over the Summer that Your Child Will Love

It’s hard to believe that summer is here, and so is our Osceola Reads’ Summer Reading Challenge! We know it's hard to fit in reading when you’re competing against trips to the beach and soaking up the great Florida sun, but just 15 minutes of reading every day can greatly improve your child’s first few weeks in Kindergarten. Join us as we share our favorite books to read over the summer, just in time to kick off our Summer Reading Challenge on June 4. All these great books can be found at your local Osceola County libraries.

Summer by Ailie Busby

There's something special about each season of the year, wherever we live in the world. Follow the adventures of two characters as they discover and explore the unique character of summer, through indoor and outdoor play. This is the perfect introduction to the cycles of the year, and one of our favorite seasons too.

Paletero Man by Lucky Diaz

Do you hear that sound? It’s the ringing of Paletero José and his ice pops that are perfect for any hot summer day! Follow the narrator as he passes through the busy neighborhood to catch up to the Paletero Man. But what happens when he finally finds him and his pockets are empty? It would take the whole community to get him that tasty treat. This book is written in a mix of Spanglish and comes with a song inspired by the book!

The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen

It’s summertime so there’s no reason to pout! Follow pout-pout fish as he discovers that being glum is not really a calling. This book is filled with rhymes and colorful images as we journey with a pouty fish who learns to turn its frown upside down.

Up, Down, and Around by Katherine Ayres

There is no place else to be in the summertime than the outdoors! From seeds dropping into soil, to corn bursting from its stalks, to kids chasing butterflies and ants burying underground - summer is filled with so much fun! Take a stroll through nature with all that summer has to offer in this colorful book.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

It’s the classic tale of a caterpillar who eats its way through the days of the week. From apples to pears, this little caterpillar needs all the nutrition to grow big and strong. Soon it was time to make the biggest transition of all and transform into a beautiful butterfly!
